ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for separating maleic acid from synthetic tartaric acid containing maleic acid which comprises passing an aqueous solution of the crude tartaric acid which may still contain the catalyst used in the syntheses of the tartaric acid, is passed over a basic anion exchanger which is in the form of hydroxyl or tartrate.
