ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For separating mold sand residues, particularly those containing zirconium and titanium oxide, from castings mechanical and electrochemical processes in salt melts have been used heretofore. However, these processes are very costly; they corrode the surfaces of the castings or they fail in the case of difficultly soluble mold sand components. These disadvantages are avoided when the castings with adhering mold sand residues are put into a melt consisting of 55 to 97% by weight of alkali hydroxide and 3 to 45% by weight of one or several fluorides of the first to third principal group of the periodic system of the elements and/or of zinc at 400 to 800°C. The salt melts also contain 1 to 40% of a boron-oxygen compound and/or of boron-fluoride compound.
