The disclosed invention relates to a process for separating methane or nitrogen from a fluid mixture comprising methane and nitrogen, the process comprising: (A) flowing the fluid mixture into a microchannel separator, the microchannel separator comprising a plurality of process microchannels containing a sorption medium, the fluid mixture being maintained in the microchannel separator until at least part of the methane or nitrogen is sorbed by the sorption medium, and removing non-sorbed parts of the fluid mixture from the microchannel separator; and (B) desorbing the methane or nitrogen from the sorption medium and removing the desorbed methane or nitrogen from the microchannel separator. The process is suitable for upgrading methane from coal mines, landfills, and other sub-quality sources.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de séparer le méthane ou l'azote d'un mélange fluidique comprenant du méthane et de l'azote. Ledit procédé consiste: A) à faire écouler le mélange fluidique dans un séparateur de microcanal, ledit séparateur comprenant une pluralité de microcanaux de processus pourvus d'un milieu de sorption et le mélange fluidique étant maintenu dans le séparateur jusqu'à ce qu'au moins une partie du méthane ou de l'azote soit sorbé dans le milieu de sorption, et à retirer les parties non sorbées du mélange fluidique du séparateur; et B) à désorber le méthane ou l'azote du milieu de sorption et à retirer le méthane ou l'azote désorbé du séparateur. Ledit procédé est approprié pour valoriser le méthane provenant de mines de charbon, de décharges et d'autres sources de qualité inférieure.
