ABSTRACT A process for the extraction of higher alcohols from a mixture of these higher alcohols and alkyl polyglycosides is disclosed, which process uses ethane in the supercritical state as extractant. Ethane allows higher loadings and substantially shorter extraction times than the hitherto customarily used supercritical carbon dioxide. This results in substantial savings of materials and energy when reducing the amount of alcohols below 2% by weight, as required for most applications.
