ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for recovering iron and nickel from a mixture comprising a nickel silicate, an iron sulfide and a flux. In the process the minerals are heated under an excess of oxygen to produce iron, nickel and sulphur dio- xide. The iron and nickel are recovered. The sulphur dioxide may be used, for example, to produce sulphuric acid. The process is, unlike the prior art, exothermic so that once the mixture is heated to a temperature of about 800°F the reaction becomes self-sustaining. Furthermore, the excess heat produced may be used to dry the ore or for power generation.
