ABSTRACT A continuous process is provided for reducing sulfur dioxide to sulfur with coal in a fluidized bed. The coal is admixed with a particulate, solid, diluent material and fluidized by stream of SO2-containing gas introduced into the reaction zone at a velocity at least 1 foot per second greater than the minimum velocity required to fluidize the bed. Sulfur is recovered from the gases exiting the bed.
