The invention relates to a process for stabilizing olefinically unsaturated monomers, wherein a retarder- containing composition which comprises a solvent and a quinone methide of the formula: Image (wherein X is halogen, -O-R3 or -S-R3 and R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl) as a retarder is added to an olefinically unsaturated monomer or monomer mixture which comprises at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer, and to the monomer composition resulting therefrom.
