ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to an improved process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from gases resulting from combustion of sulfur-containing fuels such as coal, with the gases passed through a wet scrubber to which there is added an aqueous solution of calcium oxide containing 2-10% magnesium oxide, whereby the effeciency of sulfur dioxide removal in the scrubber is increased and scaling reduced therein.
