ABSTRACT A process for surface treating granules, as well as the granule product and surface treatment apparatus thereof. Granules, such as ammonium sulfate or potassium sulfate for use in commercial fertilizers, are surface coated with a solvent such as water, and then dried to remove excess solvent. In so doing, the particle surface is slightly softened and then recrystallized in order to enhance its strength. A gentle agitation means like a slowly rotating, cylindrical drum may be used to allow a predetermined amount of time for recrystallization of the granules, as well as to remove sharp corners of the product. The solvent may also include a small amount of solid additive such as starch in order to lend time-release and weather resistance properties to the product.
