A Fischer-Tropsch catalyst is activated by a process which comprises contacting the catalyst with a hydrogen-containing gas in a first stage at a pressure of up to 5 bar, rapidly increasing the pressure to at least 10 bar and contacting the catalyst with a hydrogen-containing gas in a second stage at this pressure. The process may also be used to reactivate an at least partially exhausted catalyst. The catalyst, once activated, may be used in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
