PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: L'invention concerne la préparation d'alkylthio- phénols par réaction d'un disulfure de dialkyle avec un phénol. Dans le procédé selon l'invention, on effectue la réaction en présence de chlorure d'aluminium ou de chlorure ferrique au sein d'un solvant du type alkyl- benzène ou, seulement dans le cas de la méthylthiolation, dans un excès de disulfure de diméthyle. Ce procédé permet notamment d'obtenir, avec une sélectivité et un rendement excellents, les alkylthio-2 phénols qu'on peut ensuite transformer en acyl-4 alkylthio-2 phénols par réaction à une température allant de 40 à 100°C avec un complexe BF3 : 2RCOOH où R désigne un radical alkyle ou propène-lyle, à raison de 10 à 15 moles de complexe par mole d'alkylthio-2 phénol.
