ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An impregnation treatment is carried out for incorporating to the core of the open residual porosity of the product, at least a liquid solution of an alkaline compound capable of leaving, after a heat treatment, a non-oxidizing and auto-cicatrizing refractory residue. The impregnated product is dried and then subjected to a heat treatment with a view to forming on the surfaces of the open pores of the composite material, a protection coating showing low sensitivity to internal moisture constituted by the refractory residual. A superficial coating layer forming an external wear- and oxidation-resistant protection and anchored at least in the superficial porosity of the product may then be formed.
