A method for coating a metal article with a corrosion-resistant material in preparation for plating with a metallic element and a product produced by such a method. The method provides a corrosion-resistant coating on a metal article such as a metal blank prior to the blank being formed and plated to produce a bumper or bumper accessory for a vehicle. The method includes the general steps of cleaning the metal article, pretreating the metal article with a pretreatment material such as chromic phosphate, ferrous phosphate, or zinc phosphate, sealing the pretreated article, and painting the cleaned, pretreated, and sealed blank. The paint used is preferably a powder paint. After the article is painted, it may subsequently be formed into a desired shape and be thereafter plated using a metallic plating element such as chrome. The coating applied according to the present method is sufficiently enduring such that it is only necessary for the plating to be applied to the exposed or outer surface of the component for the sake of aesthetics. The unseen side of the component may be left unplated, and reliance may be fully made upon the coating for the resistance of corrosion to the metal article.
La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé pour revêtir un article en métal d'une couche de matériau résistant à la corrosion à titre préparatoire à un traitement d'enduction métallique, et article obtenu par l'application de ce procédé. Le procédé en question comporte une étape d'application d'une couche de matériau résistant à la corrosion sur un article tel un flan métallique préalablement aux opérations de formage et d'enduction métallique de pare-chocs ou d'accessoires destinés aux pare-chocs de véhicules automobiles. Le procédé comporte une étape de décapage de l'article en métal, suivie d'un prétraitement de l'article en question à l'aide d'un matériau tel du phosphate chromique, du phosphate ferreux ou du phosphate de zinc, et de l'application d'un scellant; l'article ainsi décapé, prétraité et scellé est ensuite peinturé. De préférence, la peinture utilisée sera sous forme de poudre. Une fois peinturé, l'article passe ensuite à l'étape du formage avant d'être plaqué par enduction d'un métal tel du chrome. La qualité du traitement effectué en vertu du procédé décrit dans les présentes confère à l'article un tel degré de résistance à la corrosion que le placage de la seule surface exposée ou extérieure de l'article suffit pour satisfaire aux exigences de l'esthétique. La surface non exposée de l'article ainsi traité ne nécessite pas de placage, le procédé de revêtement assurant entièrement la résistance de l'article à la corrosion.
