ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process for the production of nuclear brominated polystyrenes. Such polystyrenes are useful as additives for several synthetic resins as flame retardants. The process is a process for affecting the nuclear bromination of a polymer of weight average molecular weight of at least 20,000, as determined by gel permeation chromatography, said po- lymer having an aliphatic backbone chain and aromatic rings depending from said chain at intervals along the length thereof respectively, comprising: reacting a solution of said polymer in a liquid organic solvent that is a solvent for the halogenated product, with bro- mine chloride at a temperature up to about 50°C, in the presence of a metal salt Lewis acid bromination catalyst having an activity equivalent to that of antimony trichloride under substantially anhydrous conditions, to produce a brominated reaction product.
