Abstract: Coal particles are carbonized by heating them in a series of fluidized beds to produce fuel gas, tars and calcined char while using recycle calcined char to provide carbonization heat and recycle car- bonizer gas as the fluidizing atmosphere for the car- bonization. A high BTU by-product gas is obtained and increased yields of oils and tars.
