Abstract of the Disclosure A process is disclosed for the carboxylation of organic substrates or reactions containing at least one active hydrogen atom and selected from the group consisting of ketones, esters, nitroparaffins and nitriles, by reaction with CO2 and alkaline phenates in an organic medium. The reaction is conducted in the presence of an alkaline phenate having the general formula: Image wherein R is hydrogen, a linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy group having up to 20 carbon atoms or a phenyl group, n varies from 1 to 5 and M is Li, Na or K, at a temperature between about 40° and 60°C and in an aprotic medium which is at least a partial solvent for the phenate and is selected from the group consisting of tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, tetrahydropyran, ethyl acetate, propylenecarbonate, triethylamine, N-methylmorpholine, a picoline, a lutidine, 2-methyl-5-ethyl-pyridine and sulpholane. The advantages afforded by the process of the invention in comparison with the prior art are much higher conversions and selectivity, greater solubilities of the reactant (and, thus, lower reaction volumes), absence of condensation by-products of the substrate or reactant, and the possibility of using phenates of lower cost compared to hindered phenates.
