ABSTRACT A process for the bromination of a monocyclic aromatic compound and its regiospecific chlorination. The halogenation reactions are carried out in a protonic solvent which is replaced by a polar solvent without isolation of the halogenation reaction product. The halogenation reaction product is then catalytically debrominated.
