A process for the catalytic partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon feedstock comprises contacting a feed mixture comprising the hydrocarbon feedstock and an oxygen-containing gas, which feed mixture also comprises nitrogen, with a catalyst capable of catalysing, the partial oxidation of the hydrocarbon feedstock, wherein the feed mixture also comprises a sulphur-containing compound. This process allows sulphur-containing hydrocarbon feedstocks to be processed without first undergoing a sulphur removal treatment. Accordingly, a process for the preparation of carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen from a hydrocarbon feedstock comprising subjecting the hydrocarbon feedstock in a first stage to a catalytic partial oxidation process as described above and subjecting at least a portion of the product of the first stage in a second stage to a desulphurisation process.

Ce procédé d'oxydation catalytique partielle d'une charge d'hydrocarbures consiste à mettre en contact un mélange fourni comprenant une charge d'hydrocarbures, un gaz contenant de l'oxygène, ainsi que de l'azote, avec un catalyseur susceptible de catalyser l'oxydation partielle de la charge d'hydrocarbures, le mélange fournie comprenant en outre un composé contenant du soufre. Ce procédé permet de traiter des charges d'hydrocarbures contenant du soufre sans devoir d'abord les traiter pour enlever leur soufre. En conséquence, un procédé de préparation de monoxyde de carbone et/ou d'hydrogène à partir d'une charge d'hydrocarbures consiste dans une première étape à soumettre ladite charge à un processus d'oxydation catalytique partielle tel que décrit ci-dessus, puis à soumetre au moins une partie du produit de cette première étape à une seconde étape consistant en un processus de désulfuration.
