ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure concerns both an apparatus and a method for regulating the output of a hot wood pulp grinder. The outlet from the pulp suspension collection pit has a rotatable chip breaker knife device in it including an array of knives all rotatable about a generally horizontal axis, and the knives are at spaced intervals along the axis. Each knife comprises a plurality of knife teeth. The orientation of the front of the knife teeth helps guide the wood pieces to be broken up. At both the bottom of the pit and the top of the knives, there are rake-like projections which interfit between adjacent knife teeth for cooperating to break up larger wood pieces and for preventing larger wood pieces from moving into the outlet. The outlet conduit has two spaced apart blocking plugs which are selectively movable to block and unblock the outlet conduit dependent upon the measured pressure in the housing, and this pressure is, in turn, dependent upon the level of suspension in the pit.
