Abstract: The invention provides a process For converting carbonaceous materials to a gas mixture containing CO and H2 by gasification The carbonaceous materials are gasified in a circulating fluid bed maintained in a vertically elongated reaction zone, con- trolled flows of carbonaceous materials and gasifying medium containing water vapour and oxygen gas being supplied through the wall of the zone. The fluidisation at the lower part of the zone is maintained by means of a controlled flow of non- -oxidizing gas fed into said zone. In the process the gasifying medium is introduced into the bed subdivided into several partial flows, the temperature in the zone being controlled by controlling the content of oxygen in the gasifying medium while maintaining a control ratio of ashes in the reaction zone by discharging a control flow of bed material from the zone. The invention also provides an apparatus for carrying out said process.
