A B S T R A C T Process for the preparation of atmospheric hydrocarbon oil distillates. A residue is separated by C4+ deasphalting into a deasphalted oil, which is catalytically cracked or hydrocracked, and a C4+ asphalt. The C4+ asphalt is catalytically hydrotreated under such conditions that more than 50 %w of the feed is converted into a material which does not precipitate in a C4+ deasphalting process. The hydrotreated product is separated by distillation into one or more atmospheric distillates, a vacuum distillate and a vacuum residue with an initial boiling point above 500°C. The vacuum distillate of the hydrotreated product is converted by catalytic cracking or hydrocracking into one or more atmospheric distillates. At least 50 %w of the vacuum residue of the hydro- treated product is again subjected to the C4+ deasphalting.
