ABSTRACT The present invention provides a process for the currentless deposition of layers of metals of Groups Ib, IIb, IVb, Vb and VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements on appropriate more electronegative metals by contacting an object to be coated with a coating bath, wherein a coating bath is used which contains a metal complex obtainable by reacting a corresponding divalent or trivalent metal halide with a hydrohalide of a base which is capable of complex formation with the metal. The present invention also provides a coating bath for the currentless deposition of layers of metals of Groups Ib, IIb, IVb, Vb and VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements on appropriate more electronegative metals, wherein said bath contains a metal complex obtainable by reacting a correspond- ing divalent or trivalent metal halide with the hydro- halide of a base which is capable of complex formation with the metal.
