A B S T R A C T The present invention relates to a new process for the dealkylation of tertiary amines by using .alpha.- chlorinated chloroformates. The process according to the invention consists in reacting an .alpha.-chlorinated chloroformate with a terti- ary amine carrying at least one alkyl radical, so as to obtain an .alpha.-chlorinated carbamate, which is when treated with a lower alkanol or with water. The process according to the invention makes it possible to dealkylate numerous tertiary amines and especially to dealkylate the alkaloids or amines which are reputedly difficult to dealkylate, such as N,N-di- methylaniline or N,N-diethylaniline.
