A B S T R A C T A process for the decolorization of pulp mill effluent streams having a pH greater than 7.0 is characterized by reducing the acidity of the effluent to b?lo pH 4.0, thereby precipitating color bodies from the effluent, filtering the effluent, absorbing organic compounds from the filtrate on carbon particles by passing the filtrate through a carbon bed, and regenerating the carbon by passing a caustic solution through the carbon bed.
