ABSTRACT A process for the determination of gold present in minerals is described whereby a carrier gas containing a low concentration of mercury is passed through ground ore or rock samples of known weight. The amount of mercury absorbed by the sample is directly proportional to the gold which has been exposed by grinding the sample. The mercury content of the carrier gas is determined before it passes through the ore, and after the contact with the ore has been completed. The difference in the mercury content allows the determination of the total gold content of the ore or rock sample. In the preferred embodiment of this process an atomic absorption spectrophotometer utilizing a mercury lamp and quartz windowed absorption cells, is incorporated in the apparatus devised to carry out the process. The process and apparatus can be used for rapid and highly sensitive determinations of gold in rocks and minerals at remote locations, when used as a portable unit. The process and apparatus can also be used for monitoring either continuously or in a batch mode, the gold content of ore during milling or extractive process steps.
