PROCESS FOR THE DIRECT PREPARATION OF ANHYDROUS SODIUM SULFATE ABSTRACT Process for the direct preparation of anhydrous sodium sulfate from thenardite ore containing sodium sulfate, comprising: crushing the thenardite ore; lixiviating the crushed ore with water or with an exhausted brine from a following step, at a temperature between about 28 and 40°C, to produce a suspension containing a sodium sulfate saturated solution, sludges and insoluble material; adding a flocculant agent; separating the sludges and insoluble material from the solution to obtain a clarified saturated solution; evaporating the clarified saturated solution to obtain a suspension with 20% by weight of solids of anhydrous sodium sulfate; settling and centrifuging the resulting suspension to increase the solid concentration of anhydrous sodium sulfate up to 90%; recycling the remaining saturated solution to the evaporation step; and drying the anhydrous sodium sulfate.
