ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification describes a process for the direct reduction of iron ores in a reduction furnace which is charged from above with iron ores. The process particularly relates to a shaft furnace wherein hot reduction gas is blown into the reduction zone and at least part of the waste gas is taken from the shaft furnace above the reduction zone and, after a cleaning operation and with the addition of hydrocarbons, is returned to the shaft furnace below the zone in which the hot reduction gas is introduced. In the lower portion of the reduction zone the rising waste gas flow which is mixed with hydrocarbons is suc- cessively displaced into different regions of the cross-section of the reduction zone by a flow of the hot reduction gas. The flow varies in direction and/or strength with respect to time.
