ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the dry cationization of starch by reaction with alkylene epoxides in an alkaline medium in the presence of water. The reaction is carried out at 5 to 40°C in the presence of a finely divided hydrophilic silica and alkai metal silicates and/or alkali metal aluminates or of a mixture of alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides or oxides and alkali metal carbonates or a mixture of one or several of these hydroxides, oxides or carbonates with an alkali metal silicate and/or alkali metal aluminate.
