ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION For the purposes of early detection of smouldering or slow burning for example in a container containing brown coal or lignite dust, the presence of a gas containing hydrogen and/or hydrocarbons is measured in or at the container, as under normal conditions such gas does not occur in brown coal or lignite dust or occurs only in amounts which are almost too small to be detected, being produced only when smouldering starts.
