ABSTRACT In a process for extracting a metal ion from an aqueous slurry containing a water-insoluble compound of the metal, the slurry is contacted with an organic solvent without previously bringing all the metal ions into aqueous solution. The organic solvent is an ion-exchange extractant for the metal ion, preferably an acid alkyl phosphate, dissolved in a diluent. After ion-exchange has taken place, the organic solvent is stripped of the metal ion, regenerated, and recycled.
