A B S T R A C T A PROCESS FOR THE GASIFICATION OF A SOLID CARBON-CONTAINING FUEL Coal is ground, dried and subsequently subjected to a partial combustion with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air, the oxygen having been obtained from an air separation plant. Hot synthesis gas produced by the partial combustion is first cooled to 100-500°C and then further cooled to 25-250°C by means of indirect heat exchange with a nitrogen-rich gas stream obtained in the air separation plant. Preferably, the heated nitrogen-rich gas stream is used to dry the coal.
