ABSTRACT of the DISCLOSURE A process for the production of hydrogen by homogeneou catalized convertion of carbon monoxide and water into carbon dioxide and hydrogen with the aid of metal carbonyl compounds as catalysts, characterized in that carbon monoxide is reacted with water in the form of a mixture of a weakly aqueous base and a carbonyl compound of a metal selected from iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and/or tungsten at temperatures above 180°C, preferably at 200 to 270°C, at a partial pressure of carbon monoxide between 1 and 500 bar, preferably between 20 and 100 bar.
