ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the pro- duction of granular sodium metasilicate containing 2 to 6% of water, based on the weight of the finished product, characterised in that an anhydrous sodium metasilicate and a sodium metasilicate solution are introduced into a first zone, with contact between the liquid and solid phases being effected by atomizing the liquid phase in a pulverulent mass of particles constituting the solid phase, said zone being subject to the action of hot gases which on entering the first zone are at a temperature below the flash drying temperature, whereby the pellets formed have adequate co- hesion and a water content from 1 to 8%. Thereafter the pellets obtained undergo a further heat treatment in a stirred enclosure in a ripening zone wherein the average temperature is below the fusion temperature of sodium metasilicate pentahydrate so that the sodium metasilicate is at least partially converted to the pentahydrate form. The granular sodium metasilicate produced ac- cording to the process of the invention, has a narrow-range of granulometric size distribution and good resistance to attrition and dusting. Being stable during storage and unreactive with both perfumes and non-ionic surfactants, it is useful in the manufact- ure of detergent compositions.
