ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A noble metal-containing zeolitic catalyst having cracking activity and hydrogenation activity is pretreated by contacting the catalyst with a nitrogen-containing compound to decrease the cracking activity of the catalyst followed by treatment with hydrogen to recover the hydrogenation activity of the catalyst. The pretreated catalyst is used in a process for the hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons.
