ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the hydrogenation of halogen-substituted compounds of elements of the 2nd to the 4th period of the groups III to V of the period, i.e. table with the exception of gallium, aluminum, carbon and nitrogen. This process is characterized in that a) finely divided aluminium is added to a salt melt consisting of 50 to 67 mole % of AlCl3(anhydrous) and 50 to 33 mole % of sodium chloride, b) hydrogen is passed into the suspension, that is stirred or dispersed by some other means, in order to hydrogenate the finely divided aluminum, c) the mixture thus formed is subsequently reacted with the halogen-substituted compound and d) the hydrogenated compound is isolated.
