A B S T R A C T Ethylene is polymerised by contact at a temperature of between 180°C and 340°C and under a pressure of between 200 and 2,500 bars in at least one stirred reaction zone, with a catalyst system comprising (a) an activator which is an alkyl- aluminum or an alkylsiloxalane, and (b) a compound of the formula (TiCla) (MgCl2)y (AlCl3)z (RMgCl)b in which 2?a ?3, y?2, 0?z ?1/3 and 0 ?b ?1, and R is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, and the proportions of (a) and (b) are chosen so as to give an atomic ratio Al/Ti of between 1 and 10.
