ABSTRACT Natural gas is liquefied by cooling it under pressure in stages, comprising cooling a natural gas stream by passing it in heat-exchange relationship with at least one refrigerant circulating in at least one circuit, so that the heavier hydrocarbons present therein are condensed the condensed hydrocarbons are separated from the natural gas in a separator; a composition A is removed from the separator comprising the condensed heavier hydrocarbons together with some lighter components selected from the group methane, ethane and propane the separated natural gas is cooled further so that further liquid is formed; a composition B comprising condensed hydrocarbons selected from the group methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane is separated from the natural gas in a separator; the composition B is removed from the separator; and the separated natural gas is cooled further so that the natural gas liquefies.
