ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process for liquefying solid carbona- ceous materials wherein liquefaction yields are increased by extracting the normally solid bottoms product with a solvent containing donatable hydrogen. The extraction is accomplished at a temperature within the range from about 50 to about 600°F and at a pressure within the range from about 0 to about 750 psig and at least a portion of the extract is recycled to the liquefaction reaction zone.
