23443-466 ABSTRACT A process for the liquid-phase preparation of nitrile from an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, by reacting the dicarboxylic acid with ammonia at a temperature of from about 200 to about 350°C, in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, poly- phosphoric acid, mixtures and ammonium salts thereof. The process is further characterised in that an adsorbant for the catalyst is added to the reaction mixture. Suitable adsorbants are filter- ing aids based on kieselguhr and Tonsil bleaching earth. The addition of adsorbant prevents the formation of deposits of poly- phosphoric acid on the reactor walls, which deposits impair the heat exchange and cause corrosion. The catalyst system compris- ing adsorbant and phosphoric acid can be easily separated off and reused for the next batch.
