A process for the preparation of a maleated polyethylene wax is disclosed. This process entails mixing in the melt phase polyethylene, maleic anhydride, free radical initiator and a chain transfer agent m-di-isopropylbenzene. This process can be a continuous process either in a stirred reactor or twin screw extruder. The resulting maleated polyethylene wax has a high acid number, essentially no objectionable odor, and Gardner color number less than 3.

Procédé de préparation de cire de polyéthylène maléatée. Ce procédé consiste à mélanger en phase de fusion du polyéthylène, de l'anhydride maléique, un initiateur de radicaux libres et du m-di-isopropylbenzène servant d'agent de transfert de chaîne. Ce processus peut se dérouler en continu dans un réacteur soumis à agitation ou dans une extrudeuse à double vis. La cire de polyéthylène maléatée ainsi produite présente un indice d'acide élevé, pratiquement pas d'odeur désagréable et un numéro de couleur de Gardner inférieur à 3.
