- 1 - Abstract of the disclosure: A process is described for the manufacture of 1,2-dichloroethane by the direct chlorination and oxy- chlorination of ethylene in a common reaction space, successively in terms of time or in terms of space, at 180 to 300°C and 0.1 to 1.1 MPa pressure in the presence of fluidized catalyst particles, the heat of the reaction being removed by indirect cooling. 98 to 40% of the total quantity of ethylene fed in are introduced into the zone in which the initial chlorination reaction, for example the oxy- chlorination reaction, takes place, and 2 to 60% of the total quantity of ethylene fed in are introduced into the zone in which the second chlorination reaction, for example the direct chlorination reaction, takes place. The process makes it possible to manufacture the 1,2-dichloroethane required for the production of vinyl chloride in one reaction space, while re-using the hydrogen chloride com- pletely and obtaining readily usable heat and with the reaction following a smooth course.
