ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a new process for the manufacture of 1,4-disubstituted bicyclic or tricyclic compounds by reacting a 1,2- bis-cyanomethyl-benzene or 2,3-bis-cyanomethyl-naphthalene with glyoxal in the presence of a base and a solvent as well as new 1,4-disubstituted bicyclic compounds. The compounds are useful as intermediates in the manufacture of optical brighteners.
