The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of compounds of formula (see fig.I) in which R2 represents hydrogen or an esterifying radical and R3 represents hydrogen or the acyl radical of a carboxylic acid or of a carbonic acid semiester, or a salt thereof which process comprises reducing a compound of formula (see fig.II) in which R2 and R3 have the meanings mentioned, or a salt thereof, with baker's yeast and, if required, converting a resulting free compound into a salt or converting a resulting salt into a free compound or into a different salt. The compounds produced by the process are useful as intermediates in the production of starting materials for the manufacture of .beta.-lactam antibiotics.
