The invention relates to a process for producing a synthetic salt-containing crushed sand and/or gravel for, in particular, asphalt-bonded top coats of traffic areas, in which connection a granular salt is mixed with cement, mineral fines and water, the resultant mortar is extensively hardened and broken in dry state into particles of gravel. In this connection a salt of a particle size of less than 0.5 mm which has been made water-repellent is used and the particle size of the mineral fines is less than 1 mm, the mixing being effected intensively in a positive mixer.
