ABSTRACT An improved process for the manufacture of acetone by the selec- tive catalytic decarbonylation of isobutyraldehyde is disclosed. The process involves passing a gaseous mixture containing isobutyraldehyde and oxygen at elevated temperature over a zinc oxide-supported catalyst containing copper oxide and from 2.5 to 25 per cent by weight of graphite, based on the ready- to-use catalyst. The conversion of isobutyraldehyde is improved as is the yield of acetone.
