ABSTRACT A process for the manufacture of iodine, in the presence of a catalyst selected from copper, gold, a transistion metal or a compound thereof, characterized in that the aqueous solution of an alkali metal iodide is oxidized - with oxygen, air or other oxygen containing gas - in the presence of carbon dioxide (an al= kali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate being thus formed).
