ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to an improved process for manufacturing mono- maleimides and polymaleimides, by cyclodehydrating the corresponding mono- maleamic or polymaleamic acid in the presence of acetic anhydride and tertiary amine, the tertiary amine being used only in a very small amount of 0.1 to 0.5 mole per mole of malesmic acid group and the dehydration being carried out at a temperature between 10° and 50°C. The maleimides are obtained in purer form and greater yield than in conventional processes and have the formula: Image (I) wherein n is the integer 1, 2 or 3, represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and A represents an n-valent organic radical. They are useful as starting materials in the manufacture of heat resistant polymers.
