Abstract A process for the manufacture of novel nitrilotriacetic acid derivates of the formula H2N-(CH2)x-CH(COOH)N(CH2COOH)2, wherein x signifies 2, 3 or 4, is disclosed, which process comprises reacting an N-terminal protected compound of the formula R-HN-(CH2)x- CH(NH2)-COOH, wherein R signifies an amino protecting group and x signifies 2, 3 or 4, with at least 2 equivalents of bromoacetic acid and cleaving off the protecting group from the resulting reaction product.
