ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to a novel synthesis of prostaglandins and prostaglandin-like compounds which comprises reacting a lactol, for example 4.beta.-[4-[3-chlorophenoxy)- 3.alpha.-hydroxybut-1-trans-enyl]-2,3,3a.beta.,6a.beta.-tetrahydro-2-hydroxy- 5.alpha.-(trimethylsilyloxy)cyclopenteno[b]furan, with a phosphonium salt in the presence of a strong base.
