ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of optically active amino acids, wherein a diastere- omer mixture, obtained by asymmetric induction, of a chirally substituted 2-imidazolin-5-one is hydrolyzed in a solvent or solvent mixture in the presence of acid or alkali. L-.alpha.-methyl- .beta.-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-alanine (or .alpha.-methyl-DOPA) which may be obtained from the above process is a powerful human anti- hypertensive agent.
